Are You Done?

I'm working with a business coach who recently challenged me to redefine what it means to be "done" with a task or project. As a small business owner, wife, and mother it feels like the list of things to get done is never ending. It's easy to get caught up in feeling inadequate or unsuccessful when the list is always growing despite frantic attempts to "catch up."

Which leads me to the photo here of all of the books on my nightstand (not including the audio book I'm listening to right now Broken Horses: A Memoir by Brandi Carlile - don't read this book, listen to it! Trust me.). The assortment of books piled up reads like all of the thoughts going through my head at any given moment. There are books I'm re-reading to prepare for an upcoming course I'm teaching. Books that focus on parenting, spirituality, and female empowerment. I used to see the pile as a series of mini-accomplishments (Yes! I finished that book and can now cross it off the list.). But I realized that as soon as I remove one book, more get added to the pile. There's always a need for more.

So, I've decided to redefine "done." Sometimes "done" means that I did as much as I can and now it's time to move on. Other times its acknowledging that whatever I'm doing may not be 1,000% perfect, but likely no one else would notice except me. It may mean getting deliverable to clients in increments rather than all at once.

This month I challenge you to reflect on how you define "done."

"the perfect is the enemy of the good"
